I started sweeping chimneys in 1978, and I have seen a lot of chimneys in my time. I have known Tom and Esther since 1981 or so and have always worked at putting together the best product they can for us sweeps and have always looked into the future to see what’s next.
I started my own business in 1999 in Fremont, NH. Shortly after I started my own business, I chose to buy a top-of-the-line scanning system for my business. Right away, the camera started to show me what I could not see and paid for itself in the first few weeks of me owning it.
I did not use it in every job like some of you were already as I learned this business old school and trusted my vision and eyesight. (Laughter inserted here) I started to use my camera more and more as I got older and found some interesting things inside these chimneys that I thought were just fine.
Now fast forward to today and from when I bought the camera to now. A lot has changed for me. I changed how I was using my camera and decided all jobs get a flue scan. We went to only 3-4 jobs a day per truck. Scanning all chimneys that are masonry period, old customers, new customers, etc.
This camera has got to be the best tool in my truck. Why you might ask. When you use this tool, it helps you cut down on your increasing liability first of all, and it also gives you more credibility. “A picture is worth a thousand words” is a true statement in our industry. I cannot believe it took me 30 plus years to start using it. Now I have one on each truck, and every day it comes back with more documentation. More work, more credibility, and less risk. Because of this tool, I feel we are giving our clients the best customer service out there.
Going through the years, I have had my scanner upgraded a few times as times were changing, and so were my needs. They accommodated all I wanted in the camera and listened to what I was doing with it and made it particular to my needs.
If you do not scan each flue, you sweep, you may want to think about it and get in the game as this is the level standard of care, we all will have to be at if not now, then in the near future.

I first heard about Chim-Scans® on one of my first days working as a chimney sweep apprentice nine years ago. The client asked if we were going to use a camera. The owner of the company said that was hocus pocus malarkey. Yesterday I did an inspection coming in behind my old boss. Using the Chim-scan, we revealed evidence of a chimney fire and severely damaged chimneys home buyer was shocked at what we found and grateful for our second opinion. My hocus pocus friend had spent 5 minutes looking with a flashlight, did a smoke test, and said chimneys were in great condition. Collected his fee and left. Mark Stoner said if I wanted any success, I had to scan every flue we swept. He was 110% right.
